Final Diploma: Solent University – Fashion Design
This module provides an opportunity for you to research a unique concept and acts as the forerunner for the Final Major Project.
You will undertake comprehensive research, with a focus on primary sources, on a concept of your choice. You will be able to select, edit and creatively record inspirational material in a professional manner and will explore advanced cutting during technical sessions, experimenting with new innovative techniques. The in- depth exploration of your concept will involve image collation, collage, working on the stand, sampling, sketching, fabric sourcing and manipulation, print development and ultimately the development of exciting design ideas. Your concept should be relevant to now and demonstrate an understanding of how socio-economic, cultural and/or political factors can impact fashion.
This is when you really get to communicate your individual design identity, realize your ideas, and communicate all your strengths.
This module directly follows the Collection Research and Development module, and you are encouraged to reflect upon the work accumulated in the research module and continue to apply new knowledge and developed skills to formulate either a) A 3- dimensional final Collection or b) A 2-dimensional in-depth design collection professionally presented.
The emphasis is placed upon the creativity, innovation viability, newness, and industry-relevance of the final collection. Liaising with industry and sourcing suppliers are encouraged and promoted. You will gain professional skills in creating/ designing multiple garments by balancing colour, print, fabric, details, and silhouette throughout an outstanding range.
As a fashion designer, having a professional portfolio that showcases your individual design identity, skills and knowledge is crucial in getting a job. In this module you will create a portfolio that you can take with you into the industry, and you can continue to update and amend through your career. It should include a summation of your major project and a range of work that reflects your creativity as well as your ability to design to a commercial brief and should clearly convey research, development, and final outcomes.
This is your opportunity to gain real world experience and an understanding of working in the creative economy. Engaging in a professional environment will boost your confidence while providing an insight into the various job roles available to you. You will develop the skills and experiences expected to work competently within the creative industries whilst consolidating previous skills attained through the previous modules of study on your degree. As you transition from a student to a graduate working in the industry this will be an invaluable process and will help equip you for the exciting career paths ahead.
This module is designed to improve your employability upon graduation. In conjunction with your Portfolio, will prepare you for seeking meaningful work within the fashion industry. The fashion industry is highly competitive, and you need all the tools available to help you get a job. To help you get an interview, it’s beneficial to have a strong on-line presence where you can showcase your work to potential employers.
Alongside the creation of a personal website showcasing your strongest design work, you will do a mini design project. This can be a live project e.g. one you instigate with a fashion company you have done work experience for, or can just be for a fashion brand you would really like to work for. Alternatively, it can be a fashion design competition that suits your design identity. The purpose of this is to create more relevant and strong design work to showcase in your website and to further your professional visual communication and design skills.
